This was the first match for an MLS side to play, so far. In the coming weeks, Toronto, Los Angeles, Houston and Seattle will all get underway.
Each MLS team is divided into a different group with club teams from across the North American and Central American regions, including four Mexican club teams. Group play lasts till October 25th.
There are eight groups with 3 teams in each group. A team will play a total of four matches. Wins count for 3 points, ties one point and goals count towards the overall total in case teams have an equal number of points. The winner of the group advances to the quarter-finals.
In recent past years, the Mexican teams have been the strongest and have won the competition most often.
MLS teams are trying to buck the trend. This tournament is being viewed differently now as Soccer continues to gain more momentum with U.S. sports fans.
The Galaxy were the last MLS team to win the event, in 2000 (during the Champions Cup era-see Wikipedia). Real Salt Lake made the finals and lost two seasons ago.
The winner of this tournament gets the opportunity to play in the FIFA Club World Cup 2013. All CONCACAF Champions League matches can be viewed live at www.concacafchampions.com.
