Wondo's Hat-trick, Late Columbus Goal Put San Jose in Driver's Seat

Highlights of Chris Wondolowski, the leading scorer of MLS and the San Jose Earthquakes, are starting to feel like the old Britney Spears song, 'Oops, He (instead of I) did it again!'.

After a hat-trick performance against Colorado on Saturday, Wondo has put himself in range of the all-time MLS goals in a single season record.  Roy Lassiter holds the record with 27.  Wondo added three goals against Colorado in a 4-1 win and he now sits at 25 goals with 2 games remaining.

Wondo has single-handedly made the Earthquakes into an incredible story this season.  His ability to make the play with his body, head and foot at the right moment is the best in MLS and maybe the best the League has seen in quite some time.

The best thing Wondo did for his team is to put them in the driver's seat for the best regular season record and the Supporters' Shield that comes with that record.

Sporting KC was competitive for the regular season title and still is, but with much less of a chance now.  The Columbus Crew scored a late, extra-time goal in the 91st minute to tie KC 1-1 on Sunday.  Sporting now sits five points behind San Jose with two games remaining.

Watch Highlights of Crew's dramatic tie here.

San Jose has automatically qualified to next year's Champions League of CONCACAF that comes with the best record because Sporting KC has already qualified for Champions by winning this year's U.S. Open Cup.

This competition for best record has set up a potentially fun MLS Cup Final pitting Sporting KC against San Jose.

If San Jose makes the final, the game will be held in their home stadium because MLS decided to have the Final staged at the home stadium of the team with the better record of the two finalists.  But, because the Quakes' new stadium is being built to open next season and their present Buck Shaw stadium only accommodates nine or ten thousand people, it is more likely another bigger stadium in the Bay Area will make itself available for an MLS Cup final.

  1. Nice post and I am really like it. That was a fantastic match and all the three goal scored by wondo was amazing. From my point of view it was an team effort game.
