Champions League Survival at Stake this Week for KC, Houston, San Jose

Group play ends this week for Sporting KC, the Houston Dynamo, LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes in CONCACAF Champions League.  Each team has a chance to win their group and move on to the quarterfinals of the Championship round scheduled for early next year.

The Galaxy are the only MLS team to have already qualified for sure.

The quarterfinals will match teams by ranking number, one through eight, depending on their group play results.

If Sporting KC, Houston and San Jose can qualify for the quarterfinals, it might be the best chance for an MLS team to win the Champions League and move forward to the FIFA Club World Cup late next year.  It has never happened and it is way overdue for an MLS club to win the Champions League crown.

The Club World Cup features the best club teams from South America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Manchester United, A.C. Milan and Barcelona have all played in past Club World Cups and won the title.

Wednesday night at 8pm ET, Sporting KC plays club Olimpia from Honduras.  Also, Wednesday night, at 10pm ET, San Jose plays club Heredia of Costa Rica.  Thursday night, Houston plays club Arabe Unido of Panama at 8pm, ET.

Each of these matches should be exciting and dramatic.  Teams are fighting for competition survival and they want to prove their worth, from an international perspective.

Fans in KC, Houston and San Jose will be watching.  For all other sports fans, at least know your options because these matches will be fun to see while eating and drinking at a sports bar/restaurant.  Match times and Tv listings are detailed here.
